Bill Would Give Massachusetts More Crime
The
state of Massachusetts is looking
at a lot of crime that has gone unchecked according to the
state’s Attorney General Martha Coakley. Coakley said that the
state should not be thinking about getting slot machines until
they handle the money laundering, organized crime and wire
tapping that has gone unchecked. It really is not as ridiculous
as it first sounds. It appears that Coakley is warning the state
against existing crime, when in reality Coakley is afraid of the
crime that will come in when the slot machines are legalized.
The
aforementioned crimes are ones that are usually associated with
slot machines and gambling, which is why she thinks they should
be worried. She says that without a strong legal structure the
slot machines will bring in these crimes and make the state a
virtual cesspool of crime.
These
comments were made as House Speaker Robert DeLeo made an
announcement that he is planning on filing a bill that will make
slot machines legal within the next couple of weeks. Coakley
said that she felt this was a mistake and that the state was
getting ahead of itself. She said that they have to update their
laws to protect their citizens from the kind of crime that
follows slot machines, before they actually bring them in.
Other
representatives agreed with her. There were several comments
that the state had more work to do before they introduced a bill
for slot machines. Senate President Therese Murray said that the
other states that had brought in slot machines too fast that
someone had ended up going to jail – and that they wanted to
avoid that at all costs. She felt that there were laws that
could be put in place before the bill was introduced.
