Gaming Desired at Tracks

It is no secret that the majority of the horse racing tracks out there today want slot machines to help them compete with those that already have them. They want to be competitive with their neighbors and they want to make a lot of money. They know that there is a certain amount of their hands being tied if they do not have the ability to bring in more money. They can try and market to those people who are still interested in playing the horses without other gambling options like slot machines, but they cannot offer them the same size purses that the others can.

In Minnesota, there are still many people that are against any kind of slot machine gambling in the state though, so for the tracks to get any headway they have had to fight tooth and nail. Lawmakers have been pushing to see some kind of expanded gambling, but to no avail. Indian Gaming Officials say that any expansion in gambling is going to leave them without the revenue sources that they have had all this time. They say that there will not be more money coming in from an expansion, rather the money and the jobs will simply be moved from where they are now – at the Grand Casino Hinckley – to another venue. They argue that if the state is interested in bringing in more revenue that they should look elsewhere.

The tracks disagree as they say that there are plenty of people who are located closer to a track than they are the casino and that are not gambling now, but would if the slot machines were closer to them. They say that there is ample room for the industry to grow in the state.
