B.C. Bringing in Millions in Slot Machine Revenue

The number of slot machines obviously is directly related to the number of slot machine addicts as well as the amount of slot machine revenue that the government pockets. British Columbia has seen a large increase in both – with slot machine and gambling revenues coming in at $515 million with $457 million going to the provincial government. However, with those hundreds of millions, you also have a large increase in slot machine addicts.

The number of slot machine and gambling addicts entering treatment facilities increased by 25%; the number of calls to the gambling Help Line has increased ten fold since 2000; and the number of calls just from last year to this year have increased 45%. Of the $457 million coming in, only $4 million is going to help slot machine and gambling addicts overcome their addiction.

The province has already made an estimate of roughly 2,000 Valley residents who are addicted to the slot machines and casinos. They say that that number keeps increasing, as do the types of gambling within the community. However, others say that people who are addicted to the slot machines would have just found something else to be addicted to if the slots hadn’t come in.

They say that the number of jobs that have been brought in by the slot machines and casinos far outweigh the number of problems that they will end up bringing in. Not true, say some residents. They reference two women mugged coming out of a casino who were robbed of their chips and winnings. The police say they just need to tighten security so that slot machine players and gamblers can come and go and feel safe doing so.
