States Bring in Slot Machines to Help Budget

Every time a state brings in slot machines to help increase their revenue, another state starts to panic. Take for instance the fact that Pennsylvania just added slot machines to their racetracks, as well as some stand alone casinos. The slot machine revenue that they get will be taken from the states that surround them. New Jersey, Delaware, New York, West Virginia – these are all states that offer slot machines and are dependent on their revenue to meet their bottom line. With PA bringing in 61,000 slot machines, they are probably going to start having a hard time with that.

Mississippi brought their slot machines to land. After Hurricane Katrina tore through there, they made a decision to move their riverboats on dry land. Now they may look like riverboats, but those slot machines aren’t going anywhere. There were a dozen slot machine casinos destroyed by Katrina, but nine of them have already returned – 800 feet from the water’s edge.

Because so many states need the additional income, it is tough for them to say no to the amount of money that slot machines bring in. They are also trying to get a portion of the Indian gaming that has spread across the country. Indian gaming has grown three times as fast as commercial, which makes their slot machine revenue much higher overall – and many states are hoping that they can get a chunk of that.

There is also the hope that by the government trying to ban the online slot machine gaming, that it will force people to play the real deal – thus ensuring the states even more money. Much of this might go to the lotteries instead of slot machines however, because they can play the lottery online in some states.
