Slot Machine Compact Almost Official

After 15 years of negotiations that were going nowhere, and litigation that ended up just as much of a mess, the Spokane Tribe of Indians and Washington State have finally reached an agreement on a slot machine compact. The compact will provide much needed slot machine revenue to the state, as well as to their people – but more importantly to the Washington government, it will keep slot machines regulated and limited in nature.

The slot machine revenues are earmarked for a variety of causes, especially better heath care and higher education for tribal members. The tribe is going to upgrade its two slot machine casinos that they already have, as well as look into building a new slot machine casino – but they must get federal approval first.

The tribe has been operating their slot machines even though it is illegal to do so in the state. The state and the tribe have met to talk and then not succeeded, several times; this is the first time they have reached any sort of agreement. The new proposal actually does not give any slot machine revenue to the state. The state will take the slot machine compact to the people who will get a chance to discuss it before it is finalized.

Although once legalized every tribe will have the right to offer cash slot machines, it will be the Spokane’s that get them first. Some don’t think that they have a right to jump over the other tribes and get slot machines first, but since the other tribes will be able to have them as well, it all works out in the end.
