Deficit Does Not Mean Slot Machines, Yet

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley is using $967 from the state’s “rainy day fund” to try and shore up a huge deficit in the state’s $30 billion budget. Many thought that he would use slot machines to help with that deficit, but O’Malley is trying something else. He would like to keep the slot machines on hold for awhile, and see if there is another way around it.

Because of the “structural deficit” that the state has seen, many thought it would either be slot machines or increased taxes that would be responsible for taking up the slack. O’Malley said he would not allow these deficits to “derail their progress” and increased education, environment, public safety, and health care funding this year.

Many think that O’Malley is playing it too close to the vest, and that he should have legalized the slot machines and made more drastic changes to the budget. O’Malley felt that he needed to take care of what was in front of him and not spend his time “chasing his tail” over getting slot machines legalized. Many think that he has set himself up for failure for next year, for without an additional income such as taxes or slot machines coming in; he is going to make it harder on himself to balance the budget next year.

They feel that with all of the increases O’Malley put in this year, and the taking of the money from the “rainy day fund” that he should at least start looking into legalizing slot machines before it is too late to do anything about it.
