Patrick Thinks Slot Machines Will Close Budget Gap Governor Deval Patrick said that he is looking into legalizing slot machines as a way to deal with the $1 billion budget gap that the state is facing. He thinks that by legalizing the slot machines they will be able to put more money into both the budget and their cities and towns. He says that unless he legalizes slot machines, or comes up with another idea, he would have to reduce local aid to make the budget work, and he won’t do that. At a meeting with local leaders, he asked their opinions on whether or not slot machines and casinos should be legalized in Massachusetts. He said that he has his own “misgivings” about legalizing slot machines – that he is concerned about the social effects that it would have on the state. He is also concerned that by legalizing slot machines to help their budget that he would be putting the brunt of the problems on poor people – who most commonly are the ones who gamble. Patrick
said that he is not saying no or yes to the slot machines at
this time; that he wants to look at it from every angle before
he makes a decision. Other lawmakers have already introduced
bills to legalize the slot machines, and Patrick hopes that they
will have made a decision within the first three months of his
term.
