Department of Health spokesman Richard McGarvey said that the state of Pennsylvania is taking steps to take care of the slot machine addicts within the state. After a recent survey, they discovered that most of the counselors within the state’s contracted agencies had no experience in assisting those with a slot machine gambling disease. He said he felt it was important for those counselors to have the proper training so that if and when a slot machine addict came to them they would know the proper way to assist them.

Wyoming Valley Alcohol and Drug Services’ CEO, Carmen Ambrosino said that they had already received requests for help from gambling addicts however, not from within their state. The request came from addicts of horse betting, slot machines, and sports betting in Atlantic City – instead of from their own Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs – which is the state’s first slot machine casino.

As usual, it will entail those with a slot machine gambling problem coming to them to seek the advice and assistance, but they will be ready for them with the new training that they will be getting. More than 100 counselors are currently taking the course on how to deal with slot machine addiction, and more are expected to follow. They have twenty counselors that have completed the program and will be available to the slot machine gambling addicts.

Serento Gardens Alcoholism and Drug Services in Hazelton, PA, will send all five of their counselors to the slot machine addiction counseling program. He said that one of the biggest problems the state is going to face is getting others to take the class as the state does not have much funding for the service, and counselors are afraid that if they take on a slot machine addict they won’t be paid. Since insurance doesn’t usually cover slot machine addiction, people think they won’t get money for treating the addicts.
