Illegal Slot Machines in Texas

There has been talk of legalizing slot machines in Texas, if for no other reason than for the fact that they are losing billions of dollars of possible slot machine revenue. If it isn’t the people going over the state line to play the slot machines, then it is those playing the illegal ones that exist in state.

Texans flock to Louisiana and Las Vegas on a regular basis to play the slot machines, and that is revenue that could be staying in Texas. Then there are the illegal slot machine parlors that have popped up here, there and everywhere, and because they are illegal – no taxes are being paid. There again, are millions of dollars in lost slot machine revenue.

The amount of illegal slot machine parlors in Houston has grown over the past few years, to the point where it is starting to become an epidemic. These “neighborhood casinos” are running slot machines and not being checked and the law is not being enforced. If the slot machine operators are prosecuted, they only pay a small fee because the law isn’t strict enough to keep them from operating.

Even though many states are now offering slot machines at their racetracks, Texas has refrained from the legalization. There was talk of bringing in an actual stand alone slot machine casino, but the Legislature turned it down. They may revisit the idea this coming year, but as it stands right now, the state is losing a lot of slot machine revenue that they really can’t afford to lose.
