Kansans Want Slot Machine Revenue

When initially asked if they would want to see slot machines and expanding gambling in the state, 46% said that they would approve of it. When told that Missouri and Oklahoma were taking million of dollars from Kansas because their residents are going over there to play their slot machines, 56% said that they would prefer to see the slot machine revenue stay in their own state.

Currently, Kansans can play the lottery, or go to pari-mutuel betting at horse and dog race tracks, or they can play bingo for charities. However, with millions leaving the state, many would like to see gambling expanded to allow slot machines within the state. They feel that if there is that much money going to another state, they should have slot machines as well and benefit from them. A group called Kansans for Economic Growth wants to see slot machines become legal. They had the survey taken so they could see how people would feel about legalizing slot machines within the state.

The group is trying to get support for a slot machine casino that they are trying to build in the southern part of Kansas near the Oklahoma and Missouri borders – in a town called Galena. Kansans can also play the slot machines at the four casinos that are on Indian reservations, but the state does not receive any of the slot machine revenue from those casinos.

Last year the legislature considered passing a bill that would have legalized slot machine casinos in Kansas, but they would have been run by the state. The bill failed in the Senate, but if it had been approved, it was estimated that the slot machines would have brought in roughly $150 million a year for the state of Kansas.
