Lawmakers Make Slot Machines Part of Their Agenda Maryland’s lawmakers have more than slot machines to discus this time around as they seem to be inundated with issues. The most important thing to them is how to fund education as they need capital for the schools very badly. One of the ways they could bring in funding, according to some, is to legalize the slot machines. They think that if slot machines are legalized them they will end up with a budget surplus. Lawmakers will probably end up spending at least part of their time discussing the pros and cons of slot machine legalization; especially since Governor Ehrlich tried for so many years to get them approved. Obviously he was not successful in getting the slot machines legalized, but this year a new group is pushing for them as well. For many of the legislators it seems that health care, schooling, and slot machines are going to be their big three for the year. Some of them say that not only will the slot machines themselves be an issue, but so will electronic voting machines as many think they are similar beasts. Some of the legislators said they would vote for the slot machines as they have in the past, but they would not support an increase in taxes. Some want to package the bill as a tax increase that would be part of a slot machine option, but legislators are saying no deal.
