More Interest in Slot Machines, More Money for the Cause

With Massachusetts starting to look like it could be the next to legalize slot machines, many are looking to help support the cause. The Legislature has, up until now, been very clear about the fact that they will not legalize slot machines. However, with the budget being in a deficit, it is expected that the mentality will change and they will decide to legalize the slot machines – but some are still hoping that they won’t.

The last time that it looked like slot machines might be legalized – back in 2002-2003 – the gambling companies spent millions on lobbyists to try and plead their case. It ended up not mattering, for the slot machines still were not legalized. Back in 2003, some companied spent hundreds of thousands in trying to get the slot machines legalized by hiring people close to the government – hoping that this would work for them – it didn’t.

Governor Patrick says that he doubts that all of the hoopla being tossed around about the social ills of slot machines will turn out to be what they say – and he stresses that slot machines must be considered a serious option to help them with their budget. Patrick says that some estimates say that slot machine revenue could be as high as $500 million a year – money that is sorely needed in the state.

Some of the legislature seems to be warming to the idea of legalizing the slot machines, but there are some who cite the research that says for every $1 in slot machine revenue you end up with $3 social costs. Patrick, and others, call that number overstated, and that the state needs the money from the slot machines more than they need the naysayers.
