No Slot Machines Without Political Spending

It is a fact that in many cases the squeaky wheel gets the grease – and it is no different with slot machines. Those tribes that want more slot machines or bigger and better casinos simply make a lot of noise and donate a lot of money to the right political campaigns, and next thing you know, they have more slot machines and everything else they wanted.

But what if you are a small tribe who does not have money to line the pockets of the state government, when you are living in old trailers, with no electricity or running water – how do you get slot machines? You don’t. It is simple, without the money to “encourage” the government to give you what you want, and in this case desperately need – you will not get your slot machines. This is what is happening to the Yurok Tribe in California. They are the country’s poorest tribe, and yet they cannot get slot machines to support themselves. The tribe is surrounded by other tribes making billions off of slot machines, and all they want is enough to make roughly $1 million a year.

They want the necessities of life, and cannot get them without slot machines. For example, if you count up all of the money that the tribe made last year from their federal grants, timber sales and $1.1 million from a fund that comes out of the other tribe’s pockets – the Yurok tribe brings in about $12 million. This is less than the amount that the Aqua Caliente Band of Mission Indians is spending to update their rooms in their hotel.

The government has to stop worrying about their bottom line so much, and award slot machines to this tribe before they fall off the end of the earth and no one even remembers they were ever there.
