Overton Tries to Put Slot Machine Opponents at Ease

Delegate John Overington met with residents in Bedington, West Virginia, to talk about their concerns over the number of slot machines in their county and the surrounding areas. They expressed to him their fears about how many slot machines there were, as well as what might happen should table gaming be legalized. They said they wanted a say in whether or not nearby Jefferson County was allowed table games as they say that the slot machines have already affected them negatively and they won’t want the tables.

Overington said that since the slot machines were a multi-million dollar business for the state, they were considering table games as a way to hold onto that revenue since neighboring states were likely to take some of their revenue now. With the nearby states having slot machines also, they need table games to set them apart. He said that anyone who sells alcohol is allowed five slot machines, and the reason that they want them so badly is that they bring in more money for a business than just their food or alcohol.

He said that the money from the slot machines goes back to the state, and comprises about 15% of the state’s budget. The people of Bedington said that they wanted to see the slot machine revenue going toward programs that would educate people on the dangers of gambling. One resident said that she felt it was “blood money” and that the state was basically sacrificing the well being of its residents to bring in money that they could get elsewhere.
