PA’s Slot Machines Help State Strike It Rich

With a potential of 61,000 slot machines at 14 sites in Pennsylvania, the state has the possibility of bringing in billions of dollars in revenue. The plan is for the slot machine revenue to relieve some of the burden of property taxes that residents have been feeling. Many think that the amount of money that the slot machines will be able to bring in will eclipse that which the state lottery has been bringing in.

One concern that residents have is about the amount of revenue that is coming in. firstly, it has to come from somewhere – presumably residents’ pockets. In order for the slot machines to succeed, someone has to put money into them. Some of that revenue will come from tourists from out of state – but much will come from in the state itself. There are concerns that those that usually play the slot machines are those who cannot afford to play them in the first place – and usually end up losing their homes over a slot machine addiction.

Another concern is what the state is going to do with all of the excess slot machine revenue. Some will go to the property tax owners, but much will be left over. The slot machine revenue will be able to do a lot for the state if the government uses it wisely and does not overspend based on the amount of money that they are assuming will come in.

However the slot machines end up panning out for the state, if government officials are smart about how they spend the revenue – the state could be looking at being monetarily problem free for many years. Hopefully those that play the slot machines will be just as smart with their money and don’t end up a worst case scenario.
