Perry Wants Slot MachinesRepublican Governor Rick Perry has been trying to get slot machines legalized in Texas – but he knows he is fighting a lost cause. He tried to get the slot machines legalized at racetracks to bring in funding for pubic schools, but the Legislature vetoed the idea. He says he has had conversations with lots of people who want to see the slot machines legalized, but they know that it is all but impossible. The Texas Gaming Association thinks that the state is shooting itself in the foot by not legalizing the slot machines. Chris Shields, the lobbyist for the group says that since Texans are already gambling away millions of dollars at slot machines in other states why not bring that money home and do some good with it. Most Texans live within an hour and a half of a slot machine, and even if they don’t want to drive there are busses that will take them as well. However, the Baptists and House members will not allow any expansion of gambling in the state, and that means no slot machines. Opponents say that the slot machines would just lead to addiction and crime, and that since it isn’t a stable source of income – as you can’t count on people playing the slot machines the same amount all the time – it isn’t worth the problems that they would bring with them.
