Pimlico Race Course Needs Slot Machines

Pimlico Race Course is having some problems – to put it mildly. It seems to be the general consensus that if they don’t get slot machines they are going to have to close – which does not seem to bother some people. Pimlico is currently sitting on a nice piece of prime real estate, and many think that if the track doesn’t get their slot machines and has to close – there could be something more worthwhile for the community going in there.

State Sen. Lisa Gladden already thinks that without slot machines the track is going to close and thinks that the residents need to start making some decisions as to what to do with the property once it is vacant. She suggested a Wal-Mart or some sort of housing could go there as well, but no matter what ends up there the residents need to get the ball rolling. She feels that since there really is no conceivable way that they are going to get the slot machines, they will close and the empty structure will be a blight on the surrounding areas. She fears an “open-air drug market” will take over the track.

The owners of the track, the DeFrancis’ have been trying to get slot machines legalized at the track. They have been very clear about the fact that without the slot machines, there is no way they can afford to keep the track open. Others think that the track and certain government officials are taking a doomsday approach to the track and say that the track could remain open without slot machines. They think that although it would truly be hard to operate without the slot machines, it could be done if it was wanted badly enough.
