Saturday Talk Turns to Slot Machines Governor Deval Patrick is still talking slot machines. It seems to be on everyone’s mind as to whether or not he will legalize slot machines in the state, and he seems to be trying to figure that out for himself as well. Coming into a state that is looking at a projected $1 billion deficit in their state budget – of not slot machines then what? At a Massachusetts Municipal Association meeting on Saturday, the governor said that he is concerned about what slot machines would bring with them. He said the social costs of slot machines and casinos may outweigh the benefits – especially in the cases where some residents may be tempted to play the slot machines in an attempt to get out of the poorest regions of the state. Slot machine addiction has long been linked to the poorer members of our society, and Patrick is concerned that this could be the case in his state as well. However, he said he does not yet know if the money needed to fix the benefit might be worth the social ills that slot machines would bring, or if they would end up being more of a disease than a cure. Last year the Democrats did not pass a bill that would have legalized slot machines at the state’s racetracks. Many fear that if slot machines were allowed to come in, the next thing you know there would be casinos and slot machines all over the state – due to the interest by Indian tribes in Massachusetts.
