Passamaquoddy Tribe Seeking Slot Machines

The Passamaquoddy Tribe has been trying to become self sufficient for years, even trying to get permission to open a slot machine casino on their land in 2005. The governor vetoed the slot machine proposal, and then the state allowed a casino to be built in Maine. The tribe has been forced to sit and watch slot machines come into a state who is already bringing in millions and billions of dollars from other sources of income, while they sit by just trying to get one source of income at all.

The tribe is about to change that though – they started a petition to bring in slot machines at a harness racing track in Washington County. According to the Secretary of State, they have enough signatures to enable them to put the slot machine referendum on the ballot for the voters to decide in November. They are not the only tribe to try to bring in slot machines, Maine voters voted against a casino that was backed by three tribes just three years ago, so this new referendum may not pass.

Or it might, just because of the new slot machines coming into Bangor, and the fact that slot machines are allowed at harness racing tracks now. Residents approved the slot machines at the tracks because they believed that they were supporting the racing industry, so it may not pass because they may feel they have allowed enough gambling already.

No matter what happens with the slot machines, the state has a responsibility to help the tribes come up with ways of supporting themselves – and if that means allowing slot machines, then that is what they need to do.
