Who Gains if Slot Machines are Legalized?

There are many people who would benefit from the legalization of slot machines, some of whom are running the state. Massachusetts has a budget deficit, and Governor Patrick thinks that legalizing the slot machines is a way of reducing the deficit that they currently have, while supporting the race track industry. He wants to meet with slot machine proponents to see if they can explain to him how they feel about the legalization since all he has spoken to are those who are against it.

The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head on Martha’s Vineyard would benefit from the legalization of slot machines as well. They want to be able to offer Class III slot machines, since they will be able to do that once they are legalized elsewhere in the state. The Mashpee Wampanoag on Cape Cod are also looking to get into the Mass. slot machine business. They are trying to gain state approval, and once they get it they will be able to offer Class III slot machines right along side the Wampanoag Tribe.

Then of course, there are the unions - the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and the Hotel, Restaurant, Institutional Employees and Bartenders Union, Local 26 who also want to see slot machines legalized. They know that by allowing slot machines and casinos they are opening a whole new playing field for union employees – both as new recruits and as a job source for current members.

Then there are the residents of Mass – and no one is asking them until just yet how they feel about the legalization of slot machines – because the state is split. Some want the slot machines, some don’t. Some would rather have slot machines than new taxes – and vice versa. It is a fine line they are walking, and once they legalize the slot machines there is no going back.
