Spokane’s Need Slot Machines

Many have been talking about the slot machine compact that the Spokane’s want to sign with Washington, and about how it wouldn’t be fair to the other tribes, and how it sounds fishy to them. They want to know why after years and years of court fights the Spokane Tribe is ready to sign a slot machine compact, besides the fact that it would be a sweet deal for the tribe.

The tribe wants the government to approve a compact that would allow them to bring in a maximum of 4,700 slot machines at five sites, and they say it would be good for both them and the state. Tribal secretary Gerald Nicodemus told the state that this is a good faith sign from the tribe and the beginning of a “new and positive relationship.”

As the tribe is the only tribe in the state without a slot machine compact, yet still runs them at their casinos, many feel that this compact would reward them for operating illegally all this time. It also brings to question how much they are going to let gambling expand, for if they approve this compact – all of the other tribes are going to want to increase the number of slot machines that they are allowed as well.

The tribe told lawmakers that this new compact would help the tribe with their ability to sustain themselves as a fully functioning entity – it would allow them to pay for better education, better health care, as well as a better economy for the tribe. They say that the additional slot machines would assist them in their quest for self sufficiency, and with the millions that they would stand to make on the new compact, that is probably true.
