Slot Machine Petition Trial PostponedThe Florida Supreme Court has postponed a trial regarding slot machines in Miami. The court case is in regards to the validity of the state constitutional amendment that allows slot machines in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. Voters approved the amendment in 2004, but it was challenged. The group Floridians for a Level Playing Field had collected signatures to get the slot machine issue on the ballot in November 2004. Voters decided that they did want slot machines in Broward County, but not in Miami-Dade. However, three other groups who are against the legalization of slot machines claim the petition was a fraud. They say that the group submitted the petition with thousands of forged signatures, and that the slot machine issue should never have been on the ballot for voting on. They contend that if the signatures are not legal then the slot machines are not legal, and the amendment should be repealed. The Court has delayed the action until the justices can consider an appeal in the case. It is not known how the justices will rule on the slot machine case, or how it will affect those petitions currently being circulated to try and get the legalization of slot machines in Miami-Dade county on next November’s ballot.
