Spokane’s Slot Machines Still Being Considered

The Spokane Tribe of Indians has come forward to try and sign a slot machine compact with the state of Washington. However, legislators are wary of the deal and think that it would be unfair to the other tribes and to the state’s residents if they were to sign the slot machine compact. They are especially concerned as to the long term change that this might signify for the state’s other tribes.

The legislators say that by approving this slot machine compact they would be opening themselves to similar deals with the rest of the tribes in the state, which would mean that they would end up with a major expansion in tribal gaming.

The tribe and the state have long had a hard time coming to an agreement over the slot machines, and the tribe is now asking the state to end all that turmoil by signing the slot machine compact. However, in what could be seen as a truly altruistic sentiment, could also make the tribe the state’s largest casino operators and allow them to bring in many more slot machines. The tribe would be allowed to bring in up to 4,700 slot machines at five sites, which would help the state with revenue, but it would also allow the tribe to bring in more revenue for themselves as well.

The tribe needs the state to approve the slot machine compact, as well as the federal government. If approved, the gaming industry in the state would be expanded – and the amount of revenue would increase past the $1.2 billion that the state currently makes.
