With Texas Legislators considering whether or not to try and legalize slot machines, they have to wonder how the voters might take it. They would have to put it to a vote to add a constitutional amendment to legalize the slot machines, but what would be at stake here really? For starters, millions of dollars in slot machine revenue.

Texans are currently spending millions of dollars in other states to gamble, and that is money that could be put to use in the state itself. Louisiana, New Mexico, and Oklahoma are all too willing to take the slot machine revenue that Texans are currently giving them. However, any previous attempts to legalize slot machines in the state have failed, leaving Legislators wondering what would be different this time. They know that the possible slot machine revenue could go towards education, but with a current surplus in their budget, it could be hard to get them to agree to a new income source – especially one of this nature.

The problem isn’t just what is at stake with a bill like this; it is who would be affected negatively by legalizing the slot machines. There would be an increased number of slot machine addicts in the state, for those that can’t get to other states would now have it in their backyard. Also, the casinos are known to bring in crime – as they traditionally prey on the poor, and therefore the crime rate would go up as well. So, although the money that comes in will be good, are slot machines worth the price they would pay in the end? That is the question legislators need to ask themselves.
