California’s Slot Machines Gaining Strength

California has shown that not only are they a gaming state, they are one of the biggest with their tribal slot machine revenue almost doubling in the past four years. In the Coachella Valley, slot machines and gambling is the biggest industry. There are six Indian slot machine casinos in the valley, and they employ thousands upon thousands of people.

The racing industry is not entirely happy about this, as the more slot machines that the tribes bring in; the less people come to the tracks. The only state’s that don’t see this trend are those states where the tracks have slot machines as well. In California, the horse racing industry continues to decline, while tribes such as the Aqua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians continue to see their slot machine revenue grow.

The state’s tracks say that in order for them to compete for gambling dollars within the state as well as with tracks outside of the state, they have to be allowed to bring in slot machines. There are many Indian gaming deals on the books that will come into discussion this year, and if they are all approved the racing industry could see the tribes bringing in as many as 60,000 slot machines in addition to the ones they already have.

Proposition 68 would have legalized slot machines at the tracks and at card rooms – and the state would have received one-fourth of the revenue. However, voters seemed confused and the slot machine proposition was pulled from the ballot. The tracks will continue to fight for the slot machines, but if the current trend keeps going the way it is – without slot machines, the tribes will take over all gambling in California.
