Did the Slot Machine Malfunction?

Whenever a client hits a jackpot on a slot machine, the casino must make sure that it is a valid jackpot. However, sometimes it is not that clear as to what happened, or even if there was an error. Many times clients will think that they have won thousands, even millions of dollars on a slot machine jackpot, only to find out that the computer malfunctioned and that they are not entitled to anything.

This is exactly what happened at the Empress Casino Joliet on the weekend before New Years. Dawn and her husband had been playing the Triple Double Diamond progressive slot machine in the High Limit slot machine area. Next thing she knew, the slot machine locked down and people were congratulating her for winning the jackpot.

The $5 slot machine came up with the words “Call Attendant – Hand Pay $25,561” and the progressive display on the machine showed that it had reset to $12,500. She said that she was overwhelmed as she stood waiting for her check. The slot machine attendants asked her to wait for a representative from the Illinois Gaming Board as it seemed that there had been a malfunction on the slot machine.

The wheels had not lined up exactly as they were supposed to in order to win the jackpot, and therefore it seemed as if a malfunction had taken place. That what she had on her screen amounted to an $8,000 payout, not the amount originally quoted. When a slot machine malfunctions, the casino does not have to pay at all, but they offered her the jackpot that she had won.

Dawn was obviously disappointed, and a week later the casino changed their mind and decided to offer them more money than they had originally. They sent her a check for the remaining amount, so she ended up getting the full jackpot.
