Treasure Box Still a PuzzlerThe owners of the Treasure Box in Gainesville maintain that it is not a casino. They say that the site is simply an arcade where adults can come play for fun and for gift cards. However, residents, as well as lawmakers are divided on what it actually is. Some say that if it looks like a casino and sounds like a casino and pays out like a casino, you get the idea. However, the owners maintain that they are covered under the so called Chuck E. Cheese exemption to the Florida law regarding the use of slot machines in businesses. The problem is that the machines really do seem like slot machines. They take coins and pay out which to many people says that they are indeed slot machines. The maximum payout, they argue, is supposed to be no more than “75 cents on any game played.” Residents argue that since you can get a $10 gift card they are slot machines. However places like the Treasure Box call themselves adult arcades and game rooms and now they are coming under fire for trying to pass themselves off as something other than what most in the community feel they are. They say that the “arcade” is a casino, and they want it out of their neighborhood.
