Where Do They Stand? If you live in Alabama, you are probably as confused about where slot machines fit in as are those who live outside of the state. In some places they allow electronic bingo machines that look much like slot machines, and in others they don’t – hence the confusion. All of that came to a head last week as many said that they want to know where they stand on slot machines once and for all. The Birmingham City Council is asking Birmingham’s legislative delegation for a referendum on electronic bingo within city limits. The Mayor, Larry Langford, approved the resolution as well. They want to know where they stand as six other Alabama counties already allow the slot machine type devices and they want to be able to offer them as well. They know that they are going to get resistance on the issue as most of the people who play the slot machine type devices come from Birmingham. They know that they are their “cash cow” and are not going to want them to have the machines in their own backyard because then they won’t come to them to play. There
were seven yes votes for the referendum and two abstained – so
it passed without issue. They know that if the slot machines are
approved then they would be bringing in a large influx of
revenue to the county. They say that the addition of the slot
machine type devices would bring in at least $20 million to the
state a year.
