Stumbo Files Slot Machine Bill

House Speaker Greg Stumbo wants to expand slot machines and gambling in the state of Kentucky. He wants to see the state’s racetracks be allowed to bring in lottery terminals that are similar to slot machines so that the tracks and the state can bring in more money.

Stumbo says that he has filed the slot machine bill as lawmakers reconvene next month and he wants to be sure to get it voted on. The next session is a small one he says, and he doesn’t want it to get missed. He is going to try and get it to a vote as fast as possible.

The slot machine bill would be part of the 30 day session, which gives it more of a chance than if they were in a full session. Stumbo says that he is not going to make the same mistakes as his predecessors however; he is only going to call the bill for a vote of the Full House if he knows that he has 60 votes in support of it. Otherwise it would be subject to legal challenge by those who say a constitutional amendment is necessary to bring in the slot machines.

This way the bill also keeps from going through the same process that Governor Steve Beshear’s bill went through when he tried to expand gambling. His bill had to be overhauled first, then went through committee and eventually died before it could come to a vote in the full House. Beshear had wanted to allow up to 12 casinos at tracks and other locations, then they revised it to nine casinos, and then eventually nothing.
