Alabama Judge Says No to Slot Machine Raids

Governor Bob Riley of Alabama has made it very clear that he is opposed to gambling, slot machines, and anything that has anything to do with either. He has funded the Governor’s Task Force on Illegal Gambling, and has had his police move forward with shutting down all establishments that are allowing slot machines to be a part of their offerings.

Not only that, but he and several legislators have been at odds with each other as to what should be allowed and what shouldn’t be and there is some disagreement over slot machines and what they are. Riley says all electronic gambling devices, even the ones that they refer to as bingo, are slot machines and are illegal in the state. He says that if they want to play bingo they have to get a card and a marker and play it that way.

So imagine his surprise when he had his group all set to raid a Dothan bingo casino and a judge told him he couldn’t. There were more than three dozen state troopers ready to raid the slot machine establishment when a judge signed an order to halt the raid and it was delivered personally by Houston County Commissioner Mark Culver. Local officials had gone to the judge’s home to get the order signed.

This not only came as a shock but it also assuredly fueled the fire that has been brewing when it comes to expanded gambling and slot machines in the state. Many don’t understand why Riley is spending man hours on cracking down on them, but those that are opposed to the slot machines say that they appreciate his efforts.
