Anne Arundel Finally Getting Slot Machines?

Is it possible? Has Maryland actually moved forward on one of their locations to bring in slot machines? It seems impossible, but for all you naysayers out there – they have indeed made some headway on bringing in slot machines. The people of the state voted in the legality of the slot machines more than a year ago – but there have been so many hang ups that have befallen them – it has remained the elusive solution to their budgetary woes.

But just this past week a county executive has finally made a move to push the slot machines forward. Maryland’s largest slot machine facility has finally gotten their zoning legislation signed – which has been a huge hurdle for them. County Executive John Leopold signed the measure that has been holding them up – and allowed 4,750 slot machines to be located by the Arundel Mills Mall.

The developer, the Cordish Company, was thrilled that they are finally starting to see some movement on the slot machine project. The county council had delayed a vote on the slot machines for months, and the measure originally approved the slot machines at the Laurel Park race track – but Leopold had vetoed the idea.

Leopold says that he had made his decision to allow the slot machines to come in based on the fact that 60% of voters had voted to allow the slot machines to come in. He says that he was simply following voter demand. Those opposed to the slot machines say that they are not done fighting them, and are going to try and keep it from breaking ground any time soon.
