Is Maryland Getting More Slot Machine Locations? (Part I of II)

Maryland seems like they are always in the news for trying to get slot machines legalized in their state. Voters approved the slot machines more than a year ago, but it is only lately that there seems to be any real movement toward making that happen. There have been some real steps forward in Anne Arundel County and they have gotten zoning permission to move forward with their slot machines, but they are still doing battle on the home front with their residents. This leads many to feel that the state is still a long way away from bringing in the slot machines any time soon.

But as if the pot weren’t stirred enough, Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller has decided to take a crack at it as well. Miller wants to see slot machines in his native Prince George’s County which is only going to make things even harder for the state. Miller say that he has been talking to the leaders in his country and they agree that slot machines are what is needed in order to save their local racetrack – Rosecroft Raceway. The harness track has been struggling for some time and Miller thinks that adding slot machines will greatly benefit it and the surrounding county.

Miller says that the slot machines could go in the track itself, or they could put tem at an equestrian center that is located in Upper Marlboro, or they could put them at the National Harbor development on the Potomac River. But for all his planning to bring in the slot machines, he didn’t take into consideration the number of people who are against them. Senator C. Anthony Muse, whose area includes Rosecroft says that he could see approving poker or other types of table games, but that he is “socially opposed” to slot machines.
