Miami
Dade County
Decides No on Slot Machines
The
state of Florida is always in the
news for something to do with slot machines or gambling. Either
it is the legalization of slot machines down in Broward and Miami Dade Counties, or it is the problems that they
are having in signing a deal with the Seminole Tribe of Indians
to bring in table games to go with their slot machines, or some
other mundane problem. Over the past couple of weeks we have
heard a lot of talk about the slot machines that they have been
trying to bring into the Miami International
Airport.
The
airport has undergone a very expensive expansion and needed a
lot more money to both pay for that expansion and to pay for the
upkeep. They said that it was impossible for them to keep up
with it without some additional help. They proposed bringing in
slot machines for those travelers who were passing through.
While waiting for a flight, they could be playing slot machines.
They said that they were highly successful in
Las Vegas, so it only made sense that
they would be here as well.
However,
the casino owners in South Florida
were opposed to the idea. They said that if they were to bring
in slot machines, those people that would have left the airport
to play at one of their racinos would not have done so. They
said that they would lose money and put the pressure on for it
to be vetoed. They were successful in keeping the slot machines
out, but they knew that there would come a day when they would
try it again.
Now it
seems as though they don’t have anything to worry about. The
county’s leaders have decided that they are not going to try and
bring in slot machines to the airport and that it was not a
gamble worth taking.
