New
Jersey
Has Lost Its Crown
It is a
crime really – it used to be that if you wanted slot machines on
the West Coast you went to Las Vegas. If you wanted
slot machines on the East Coast you went to Atlantic City – but this is just not the case
anymore. Slot machines have become so prevalent that it is tough
to know where to gamble these days. So many states have jumped
on the slot machine bandwagon that the amount of money that can
be made is just not the same anymore.
Initially other states looked and saw how much money could be
made from the slot machine industry and they decided that they
wanted to make that much money to. However, the amount of money
that they were all hoping to make off of the slot machines was
incredible – and was based on a town that had no surrounding
competition. Once the other states started offering slot
machines as well, that pot got a little more crowded and there
were more mouths to feed.
But some
states are doing better than others. One would think that
because of its history and its beaches that
Atlantic City
would still be the top spot to gamble at but this is not the
case. Instead, Pennsylvanians are gambling more in their own
state than they are across the border. NJ saw their slot machine
revenue drop 13% last year and slot machine revenues passed
New Jersey
for the first time in history.
In
December alone, Pennsylvania residents put $2.12 billion into the slot
machines in their state, while
New Jersey residents only put $2.03
billion in theirs. Experts say that there might be a change in
these revenues this summer when players opt to make a vacation
out of it and head to the beach to do some gambling – as they
say that this is something PA still cannot offer.
