AC Casinos Lose Slot Machine Revenue Again

Atlantic City’s casinos showed a loss again for June, which was no surprise to many. With Pennsylvania running their slot machines just over the border, it was inevitable that the shore’s casinos would be losing slot machine revenue to them. They still have one ace in the hole and that is their table games that PA does not have yet, but it is probably just a matter of time before they legalize them as well.

Six of AC’s casinos lost slot machine revenue, with the other five showing an increase over last year. Overall, the casinos showed a 1.9% loss over last year, with $419.8 million being their bottom line. The figures from last year include the Sands Casino Hotel which closed this past year, so if you take out their slot machine revenue the take is a little higher, but they still showed a loss.

PA is not their only competition either. NJ is facing slot machines in New York as well, and those people who used to travel to play them are perfectly happy playing them in a casino closer to their front door. The competition is hitting them with thousands of slot machines, and NJ is having a hard time competing. They have held the corner on the market for so long, they are just not sure they know where to go from here.

In the midst of the slot machine crisis, AC is now looking at a unionization drive among the city’s 8,000 dealer workforce. The UAW confirmed that they are going to try and organize the dealers at the Tropicana, and Caesars, Trump Plaza and Bally’s joined earlier this year. Trump Marina and the AC Hilton chose not to join.

Meanwhile, the biggest loser was Trump Plaza, who came down 13.9% from last year. Their table games revenue went down 21.7% and slot machines went down 10.2%. Caesars brought in a 22% increase in their slot machine and table game revenue, which was mostly due to a 46.9% increase in table games.
