The Bay County Sheriff’s Office discovered an illegal gambling hall with about 40 slot machines running when they raided it. Oasis Sweepstakes, at 7325 Thomas Drive, was raided by police the other evening, and they had to shut it down.

The State Attorney’s Office investigator says that they told the business that they had to shut down the illegal slot machines and they did so. Patrons cold purchase phone cards and use them to play the slot machines, which is illegal.

The problem is that many people are not sure what is legal in the county and what isn’t. Some say that there are similar slot machines over at Wild Bills Bingo, but they have a sign up that says no cash value. The State Attorney says that the fact that it costs you money to play the slot machine, plus the idea that there is no skill involved, and then you get a prize for really doing nothing other than sticking a quarter in a slot, makes it a slot machine and therefore makes it illegal.

Lots of places in the area have them – at Emerald Coast Bingo they call them “Video Redemption Games,” but they are still slot machines. They say that since lottery is legal, and bingo is legal, and pari-mutuel betting is legal, and even now Broward County has legal Class III slot machines, that it has all become a very slippery slope.
