More Slot Machines Approved

In a public hearing that lasted almost three hours, the Treasure Cove Casino was awarded the 175 additional slot machines that they had been seeking. The Prince George City Council approved the slot machine addition after they had met with the casino and with members of the community.

Some people had concerns over the addition of the slot machines, with many of them citing the expediency with which it was handled a red flag for them. Councilor Brian Skakun said via letter that the turn around was too short and that he would not be able to attend the public hearing; while Lyn Florey, Executive Director of the Community Planning Council also sent in a letter saying that the matter should be tabled until they had a chance to run an “analysis on the social impact.”

Other letters were in support of the slot machines stating that they had been good neighbors and that residents did not mind them adding the additional slot machines. There were also letters from businesses in the area in support of the slot machines as well – places like the International Union of Operating Engineers, the United Native Nations, and several elders and seniors societies.

Many brought up the fact that the new slot machines and the new lounge would bring in 30 more jobs for the area, in addition to the 200 that they already employ. They said that it would also bring in more than 40 construction jobs and $5 million worth of construction, and increase the city’s slot machine revenue by about $1 million.
