Kanawha County Battle Ground

The lines have been drawn and for many this is the fight to end all fights – should table games be legalized at Tri-State Racetrack? Or will the opposition take this one as they took Jefferson County? So far the state is two for three with Ohio and Hancock County residents voting to legalize the table games, but on August 11^th, Kanawha residents will be the last to vote.

No one will be walking into this election thinking that it is a done deal, that is for sure. Opponents have been rallying at churches and meeting places across the county to try and keep table games out. They are putting up billboards and carrying signs that encourage voters to vote against the referendum, as they say it will only “imprison families” and “destroy lives.”

On the other side you have the supporters who keep touting the benefits of bringing in the table games. Charleston Mayor Danny Jones is not tied to the gaming industry and he is one of their biggest supporters. He says that it is an uphill battle, especially because many of the worries are real concerns – such as increased traffic and too little tax revenue for the counties. Jones says that there are plenty of benefits too – increased pensions for city workers like police and fire, as well as more jobs in an area that truly needs them.

Between the jobs and the money, and the evils of society that the table games are all supposed to bring in, one will have a hard time deciding which way to vote in just under a month from now. One thing is for sure though, either way there will be a fight to get their point passed – now you just have to wait and see who the voters are listening to.
