Racetracks Battling Slot MachinesWith Pennsylvania allowing slot machines at their tracks, and several other locations, it was only a matter of time before the surrounding states started feeling the pinch from the slot machines. There has been a lot of talk about how negatively it has affected Atlantic City, but the other surrounding states are feeling it as well at this point. According to West Virginia’s State Lottery, Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center has been hit by the new slot machines. For the week ending June 9th, the track had seen $39 million in wagers. Just two weeks later they were showing $32.7 million in wagers. What is the difference between the two weeks? The Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Washington County, Pennsylvania. By having slot machines at the track so close to West Virginia they are pulling their customers and hence, they are pulling their slot machine revenue. They have seen roughly 16% of their slot machine revenues drop since the Meadows brought theirs in. Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Resort in nearby Chester saw a brief change in their slot machine revenues, but they are back on track again. Wheeling says that with the addition of table games by the end of the summer they will be able to entice their lost clients to come back home.
