Slot Machine Bill Postponed AgainThe Penobscot Indian Nation has been trying for a really long time to get slot machines. They were trying the year that Bangor was approved for their slot machines, and yet they were denied that year as well. In what can only be seen as a clear cut case of discrimination, it seems that they will have to wait longer for their slot machines because of the governor. The bill that would have allowed the tribe to operate 400 slot machines at their bingo hall on their land was tabled on the last day of the legislative session, and lawmakers have continued it over to the next session in January. Lawmakers say it is because of the governor’s adamant refusal to approve the bill. The bill needs a two thirds approval from the House and the Senate in order to be able to withstand the veto from Governor John Balducci, and they got it in the House – but they were two votes shy in the Senate. The Senate thought it best to hold off on the vote until January and hopefully by then they will have the votes needed to thwart the governor’s veto of the slot machines. Baldacci says it is because he is opposed to any kind of expanded gambling, but he allowed a $10 million generating Power Ball game into the state lottery when it seemingly fit his purposes. Hollywood Slots in Bangor is already working on the expansion of their location to ensure that they can bring in all 1,500 slot machines that they have been approved for.
