Slot Machines Expected to Bring in Revenue

The city is expecting a slot machine windfall this year as the new Chances Campbell River’s community gaming center is finally open. The center had undergone an overhaul, with a new building, new look and a new name – and the city is expecting to get somewhere in the neighborhood of $600,000 in slot machine revenue from it.

The old Campbell River Bingo Palace used to be located on St. Anne’s Road, and had 55 slot machines which brought the city a little more than $355,000. However, the new facility will have 99 slot machines and therefore will bring in much higher revenue numbers. The city says that they expect the slot machine revenues over the next few years to be higher than budgeted and that they are taking a conservative estimate on how much they might actually make.

They believe that with the number of slot machines that they will have running, that they are probably looking at easily double the amount of revenue they have been getting. The money was used for capital projects last year, according to the city, as well as charities. Last year they gave out more than $1.7 million in grants, and this year they are hoping to give more.

They say that they are happy that the BC Lottery Corporation decided to approve the new building and additional slot machines, even though there had been some initial problems with how it looked. People complained that the initial building was ugly, but the Chances people think that the additional changes they have made to the building have made it more presentable.

Slot machine opponents would like to see some of the money from the slot machines go towards gambling addiction programs, but so far that has not happened. The city council said they are looking into it and that it could be something that was added this year, but no promises.
