Bwin Looking to Recoup LossesThe Austrian online gaming firm, Bwin, is allegedly considering going after those countries that they deem were responsible for their losing millions and millions of dollars in possible slot machine and gambling revenue. The company asserts that several German federal states had banned their sportsbetting, casino and poker interests, and therefore caused them to lose hundreds of millions of euros. They say that the ban cause irreparable damage to their business and their reputation. Bwin’s Chief Executive, Norbert Teufelberger, said that he was sure that the European Court of Justice would side with the company and find the German states’ actions illegal. He says that their attempts to continue a monopoly within their borders goes against the EU commission and can only be seen as an illegal attempt to block them. He went on to say that Bwin had backed a resolution that would allow the states to maintain their full monopoly in the lottery sector. He says that however, online gaming companies were to be given the right to provide their services as it pertained to slot machines, poker services, sports betting, etc. in exchange for paying a 15% tax on their gross winnings.
