Canadians Spending More GamblingIt seems that fewer Canadians are gambling these days, finding the risk for developing an addiction to great. However, those that are gambling are spending more than they did when more of them were gambling. A report form Statistics Canada shows that the amount of revenue from lotteries, slot machines and casinos was up to $13.3 billion from the $2.7 billion reported in 1992. However, the number of people who were gambling was down from 74% to 69%. The average gambler spent $513 gambling, with that number going up or down depending on where they live. One in seven Canadians that live by themselves say that they gamble, but men gamble more than women do. Men gamble $1,396 as opposed to women who only gamble $434. The Alberta Gaming Research Institute says that Canada is a gambling nation, and that they gamble more than most other countries in the world do. They say that there are states in the US that don’t have a casino or a lottery, and in Canada they are prolific. They have 87,000 slot machines and video terminals alone, 60 permanent casinos, 250 racetracks, 33,000 lottery ticket centers, and 25,000 charity licenses to run bingo games and charity slot machine casinos.
