Connecticut’s Slot Machines Decline AgainThe Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods are used to competition from each other, but they were not prepared for it from the outside world. Both casinos have reported falling slot machine revenues for the second month in a row. Mitchell Etess, Mohegan Sun’s Chief Executive said that he could not recall a time when they had back to back months with a decline in their revenue. With Twin River adding a racino and slot machines in Rhode Island, and Yonkers adding slot machines in New York, the competition is getting fierce. They say that when you add the price of gasoline into the competition, you see that not only are they competing on a slot machine level, but they have distance going against them as well. Now, with all of this going on, they are now facing yet more slot machine competition from the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe who is now looking to open a casino in Connecticut as well. The competition for the almighty slot machine dollar keeps getting harder to get. Foxwoods was hit harder than the Mohegan Sun, with Foxwoods dropping 7.2% in slot machine revenue, and Mohegan dropping 3.8% in slot machine revenue. That is a big difference. The billions that the two casinos bring in to the state are in great jeopardy, especially since the majority of it comes from slot machines. They have both upgraded and expanded, and they think that this might hold off the competition for now at least.
