Development Deal for Slot Machines

Scarborough Downs officials have confirmed that they have been meeting with town councilors to possibly bring in slot machines. They also want to bring a large commercial and residential development to the 485 acres that surround the track but are not developed. Councilors think that most people won’t mind about the development, but they are going to have a problem with the slot machines.

Town officials say that they have been eyeing the area for a large commercial development for some time, and if it is planned well it could be a wonderful addition to the area. The Town Assessor says that the property is valued at $6.7 million, and is zoned for commercial use.

They are currently looking to do a “village style” development that would have businesses and shops on the ground floors and apartments on the upper floors. They say it will not be the type of place that you would see Walmart or anything similar to that – it is about building a sense of community.

Officials say that it would be exactly what they have been looking for to improve their town, but the deal has one problem, it comes with the slot machine addition. The town has already rejected slot machines twice before, so the chances of them allowing them this time is pretty slim. Five years ago the town voted in an ordinance that prohibited slot machines, then two years ago Scarborough Downs tried to get slot machines added and the town voted them down again.
