Rendell Decides Gambling is EssentialWhen Sunday night came and went and the government still had not decided on how to balance the budget, people started getting worried that they might be laid off as unessential employees for the government. However, they assumed that the slot machines and gaming regulators were not essential either – little did they know. The government furloughed 20,000 state employees last night, without pay, but kept the gaming regulators so that they can keep getting their money from the slot machines. Doug Harbach, representative for the Pennsylvania Gaming Board says that since the slot machines are bringing in about $1.7 million in tax revenues a day that they are considered essential for the state. However, experts say that it isn’t like it is an essential thing to have, and the fact that they would keep on gaming personnel as essential and not other public services is a disservice to those employees. They say that the money is something the state would rather have than not have, but in the long run it won’t make that big of a difference.
