Internet Helps Problem Gamblers

Up until recently, if you had any sort of problem with gambling and you didn’t live near a Gamblers Anonymous program, you were pretty much on your own. Some people who live in remote areas are especially prone to developing gambling addictions as they find playing the slot machines online is the perfect way to entertain you. However, there is now hope for those that have a problem but could not previously get help because of where they are located.

Gamblers Anonymous has announced that they will be using Skype to get those that need help in remote Scotland, help. By using Skype, they will be able to call and get counseling with fellow addicts hundreds of miles away. Not only that, but it won’t cost them a dime, as Gamblers Anonymous has made it free for them to use.

Skype is an internet phone service that will allow the calls to be made over the web, and will connect even the most remote gambling addict with others who share their same problem so that they can get the much needed help they deserve. They will be able to assist those who live out in the Highlands or other small communities.

The charity is based out of Glasgow and is hoping to have the service up and running by the end of the year. They have already seen a large increase in those that are attending their self help groups, in fact they have doubled over the past year.

The only thing they are still working out is the telephones themselves. They will have to use VOIP telephones to make the calls via the internet, and they have not decided if they will be able to give those phones out for free or if they will have to charge for them. They would like to be able to do the former, but with no governmental funding that may just be impossible for the charity.
