NC’s Illegal Slot Machines

As of July 1st, all of the slot machines in the state of North Carolina are illegal except for the ones located in Harrah’s Cherokee Casino. Not only do the current owners and operators of the slot machines have to figure out what to do with them now, but the people who sell them are left with warehouses full of slot machines with no where to take them.

Many think that they are literally going to have to take the illegal slot machines to the landfill which means they are out thousands of dollars in the price of the slot machines and the millions of dollars in revenue from the machines themselves.

North Carolina has allowed video gambling for 14 years, and it has been a multimillion dollar business for operators. It has also been responsible for wide spread public corruption and illegal payouts. Even with the slot machines now illegal, federal investigations will continue into areas of Western North Carolina.

They have allowed slot machines in the state officially since 1993, but they have existed since the ‘70’s. The slot machines were originally allowed to pay out $10 in merchandise to their customers. However, in 2000, lawmakers thought it would be smart to limit the number of slot machines at 10,000, and three were the maximum you were allowed in one location.

Those that were already operating the slot machines tried to come to an agreement with lawmakers last year to help them police the illegal ones, but lawmakers chose instead to make them all illegal.
