Mohegan Sun Throws Hat in Ring

It seems that there is a new player in the game, and the other players are right to be concerned. The Mohegan Sun has joined Capital Play’s bid to take over New York’s racing franchise – running the casino end of the track. The Mohegan Sun is known for its gambling expertise, and this could put a wrench in the works for many of the other bidders, with Capital Play now having an expert on board.

The Mohegan Sun would run the slot machines that Aqueduct is bringing in, as well as the slot machines that might come into Belmont if they are approved by the state. The Mohegan Sun owns one of the most successful casinos in the world, and their slot machine numbers put many to shame. Their slot machines average $380 per slot machine for the month of January and if the slot machine terminal is built at the Aqueduct like many think it will be – there will be 4,500 slot machines there for them to run.

With the Mohegan Sun entering the mix, there will be more background checks needed as the casino’s top officers will all have to be investigated by the state inspector general. The pairing will give Capital Play a leg up on some others in the competition, although probably not the Excelsior team. They are already paired up with Steve Wynn, of the Wynn Las Vegas. Wynn considered his own bid for the franchise and chose to team with Excelsior instead.

There are four in the competition to try and get the rights to run the three tracks – Aqueduct, Saratoga and Belmont. The others are the New York Racing Association and Empire Racing Associates.
