Slot Machine MuseumJoseph Welch is a collector, always has been, always will be. He collects lots of stuff – footballs, football helmets, boxing gloves, gavels, and slot machines. He has a lot of items in each of his collections, but his slot machine collection dwarfs them all. Welch is the owner of the largest private collection of slot machines in San Bruno. He has classic slot machines, and penny slot machines. He has Laurel and Hardy slot machines, and Bilbo Baggins slot machines. He has cigar prize slot machines, as well as nickel prize slot machines. The man has slot machines. He has all makes and models of slot machines, as he started collecting them almost 40 years ago. He sold off his car collection to make room to house the slot machines. He says he actually bought his first slot machine for $10, only because he was curious as to what they were all about. That curiosity has turned into a slot machine collection so large he runs the Antique Slot Machine Museum on the second floor of his business. Admission to the slot machine museum is free, and gets somewhere around 400 visitors a month. Many people just want to see where slot machines began – back in the 1890’s – and see the progression to today. He says the best part is watching people see a slot machine from their past and have a reaction to seeing it.
